While several of you may have already discovered this on your own, we make it no secret that Topaz Studio can be demanding on your hardware. We'd like to clarify what that means, exactly, and why you should read and follow the suggestions we make to enjoy your software to the fullest!
Many users have asked by we have an OpenGL requirement to use the software. Simply put, we have that requirement because it's necessary for us to create the unique effects you find throughout Topaz Studio. Actually, our OpenGL requirements are not much different from other creative apps, from say, Adobe. See for yourself:

Why should I care about OpenGL?
In most cases, photo editing software utilizes a combination of CPU & GPU processing. Topaz Studio uses a much heavier reliance on on your graphics processing unit, also known as your graphics card. This means that your GPU, not your CPU, RAM, or Hard Drive space, will matter the most, where processing speed is concerned with Topaz Studio. This is widely known to be true in video games, where high-intensity processing has been the only place where a GPU could shine, for many years. Now, photo editing software, like ours, has begun to breach the realm of possibilities that such processing can provide to your photos, and we're very excited to share all the hard work that turns concept into reality.
But... everything else is fast! Why isn't Studio?!
As noted above, the majority of other editing software will use a combination of CPU and GPU processing, where a strong CPU will help pick up the slack from a weaker GPU. However, in Topaz Studio's case, we do not do this - we ask your GPU to do most of the work. For users with integrated graphics card solutions, this can mean the processing types that are a bit tougher on the graphics card will highlight any weaknesses the GPU hardware might have, without the compensation from the CPU. This was not a design choice, per se, but rather a decision made to provide our users with the most advanced editing workflows we can create, while still keeping things compatible with mainstream systems. The overwhelming consensus for the future of photo editing is based in GPU hardware, rather than CPU alone or CPU + GPU. We are hedging our bets that the market is correct in this regard, and are excited to provide unique photo editing solutions to our users.
Please note: If your machine hardware falls between the Minimum and Recommended performance levels, you can encounter issues using Topaz Studio! Reduce the size of your image, or install hardware that meets or exceeds the performance of Recommended hardware, if you encounter problems.

OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is the computer industry's standard application program interface ( API ) for defining 2-D and 3-D graphic images. Prior to OpenGL, any company developing a graphical application typically had to rewrite the graphics part of it for each operating system platform and had to be cognizant of the graphics hardware as well. With OpenGL, an application can create the same effects in any operating system using any OpenGL-adhering graphics adapter.
OpenGL specifies a set of "commands" or immediately executed functions. Each command directs a drawing action or causes special effects. A list of these commands can be created for repetitive effects. OpenGL is independent of the windowing characteristics of each operating system, but provides special "glue" routines for each operating system that enable OpenGL to work in that system's windowing environment. OpenGL comes with a large number of built-in capabilities requestable through the API. These include hidden surface removal, alpha blending (transparency), antialiasing , texture mapping, pixel operations, viewing and modeling transformations, and atmospheric effects (fog, smoke, and haze).
